Introduction Your challenge as a summer camp merit badge counselor is to see that the Scouts who attend your session have the best opportunity to learn about archery. It is important that they have a positive experience. This lesson plan is designed to help you plan a logical, high-quality program. You may have to use a slightly different approach in presenting the material based on your camp resources and facilities. Sign off Scouts as they complete their requirements.
Resources Be sure to utilize all the resources available to you. There are many archery clubs and orga-nizations that can help you demonstrate proper archery techniques. Utilize the resources located on pages 54 and 55 of the merit badge pamphlet. For safety purposes, it is important that at least two people are involved with the instruction of this merit badge.



DAY ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
1 Greet Scouts A. Examine all merit badge cards for the Scoutmaster's signature. Make a roster of the Scouts.
Review B. Go to the archery range and review the safety rules with the Scouts, making sure understand them.
Discuss C. Explain to the Scouts the importance of obeying the rangemaster and other instructors.
Hands-on D. Distribute one arrow to each Scout then describe each part. Do the same with a bow.
Safety Equipment E. Distribute an arm guard, shooting glove or finger tab, and quiver. Allow each Scout to handle these items. Explain how each item is used.
Demonstration F. Demonstrate the nine basic steps of a good shooting method.
Review G. Encourage Scouts to review the safety rules and equipment. Remind them that requirements la, 2a, 2b, 2c, and 5i will be reviewed during the week and that each Scout will be asked to demonstrate his knowledge.
Shooting H. If time permits, begin work on one of the rounds from requirement 4.
2 Preparation A. Prepare materials before the session so that Scouts can work on requirements and making a bowstring and making six complete arrows.
Instruction B. Instruct Scouts in construction of the bow and arrows. After the Scouts have begun their construction, begin reviewing them on requirements la, and 5i.
3 Review C. Discuss the state and local laws on ownership, use, and registration of archery tackle.
D. Discuss proper care and storage of bow, string, arrows, and leather items for requirement 3a.
E. Discuss these terms: cast, bow weight, string height, aiming, spine, mechanical release, freestyle, and bare bows for requirement 3d.
Review F. Review rules. Also inform the Scouts that may take their bow and arrows back to their campsite for completion. They must bring them back for approval.
Shoot G. If time remains, work on requirement 4a.
3 Review A. Review requirements 5a-h.
Shoot B. Continue work on requirement 4a.
Work C. Inform Scouts that days 4 and 5 will be used to give individual instruc-tion in an effort to help them complete the requirements and to qualify on necessary rounds. Also remind them to complete their bowstring and arrows.
4 Review A. Review safety rules.
Shoot B. Work on all requirements and rounds, giving special instruction where needed.
Reminder C. Remind the Scouts that tomorrow is the last to bring constructed bow and arrows for approval and that it is the last to complete needed requirements.
Note D. Inform the Scoutmaster of any Scout who might not complete the badge.
5 Wrap up A. Wrap up all the requirements. Prepare the merit cards for the proper signatures. If Scout does not complete all the requirements, make sure that his records properly indicate the requirements that he has completed and that the Scout knows why he did not complete the badge requirements.
B. Submit necessary records to the camp program director.
