I couldn't agree more with the need to categorize and standardize the categorizations of the images. Sadly, I've uploaded at least one duplicate file due to other files not being categorized.

For non-uniform categories, would it make the most sense to make the top-level topics (e.g. first aid, portraits, ropework) than program? Care needs to be taken not to overlap names (e.g. what are knot images? Cloth awards or something you tie?)

Image Category - Standardization

This is the top-level category for ALL images. And, this whole category needs to be standardized. But, we need to put some thought into this before we commit to a plan.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Obviously, punctuation and spelling needs to be addressed; e.g., "I"mages vs "i"mages?
  • Add a category for Uniform images... all uniforming images, of any type, should probably be sub-categorized hereunder. This might (should) include:
  • Required Insignia images
  • Award images
– Award images - Youth
– Advancement images
– Cub Scout advancement images
– Boy Scout rank images
– Varsity Scout advancement images
– Venturer advancement images
– Ship advancement images
– Post advancement images
– Merit Badge images
– 2010 Historical Merit Badge images
– Discontinued Merit Badge images
– Award images - Adult
– Knot images
  • Position Patch Images needs to be renamed to Position of Responsibility images and sub-categorized to something logical (but, also manageable), such as:
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth No images here; just sub-categories.
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (Troop)
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (Team)
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (Crew)
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (Ship)
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (Post)
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (OA)
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (Region)
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (Area)
– Position of Responsibility images - Youth (National)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult No images here; just sub-categories.
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Pack)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Troop)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Team)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Crew)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Ship)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Post)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (OA)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Region)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Area)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (National)
– Position of Responsibility images - Adult (Professional)
  • OA images
– Lodge Flap images
  • Temporary Insignia images
  • Miscellaneous Uniform images

This only addresses uniforming. I'm sure I left out some possible sub-categories... While I focused on a Troop, additional sub-categories for Crews, Posts, Teams and Ships may be appropriate. I really don't want us to try to go any deeper with sub-categories than logically necessary... i.e., the "unit" level is what I'm thinking.

Image categories other than uniforming also need to be addressed.

The good news: "Stacking" categories and sub-categories is, in and of itself, handled by MediaWiki "automatically".

The bad news: Every image must be categorized (or re-categorized, as the case may be) to the most appropriate lowest-level category. This, like many tasks in MediaWiki, can be quite tedious to go back and re-do (fix-up, improve), if sufficient forethought is not put into the project beforehand.

So, please post your comments, ideas, suggestions, etc. Also, if you are interested in working this project, please do not hesitate to speak up. —RWSmith (Bureaucrat), 19:01, October 12, 2010 (EDT)

I would love to help with this project.
