Each January, The Boy Scouts of America announces requirement changes. The following ranks are changing: Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, Eagle, and the Eagle Scout Rank - Alternate Requirements.

In addition, many merit badges are changing again this year including: Astronomy, Automotive Maintenance, Bird Study, Chess, Citizenship in the Community, Communication, Composite Materials, Dog Care, Emergency Preparedness, Fire Safety, Fishing, Gardening, Hiking, Home Repairs, Law, Oceanography, Orienteering, Photography, Safety, Wilderness Survival, and Wood Carving.

Two new merit badges, Kayaking and Search and Rescue, were added in 2012.

  • January 1941 – Air Scouts created (later became Air Explorers then Aviation Explorers, then Aviation Career Exploring as part of the Learning for Life organization)
