NYLT minimum age for Scouts BSA members

The minimum age to qualify to attend National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) by Scouts BSA members has been set back from 14 years old to 13 years old. In 2018, it was announced that the minimum age would be raised to 14 years old or 13 years old and have completed the eight grade. The change back to 13 years old was documented in a memorandum Adobe Acrobat PDF from the Scouting U Support Committee Chairman and Scouting U Team Leader.

New online Youth Protection Training

New YPT training is available as of March 1st at my.Scouting.org -- if you had already completed the online Youth Protection training that was supposed to be done by Oct 2018, there's no need to go redo your YPT training until it expires. If you had started it but not completed all four modules, your progress will be reset and you will have to do your online YPT training from the beginning.

February 2019

New name

February 1, 2019 — The Boy Scouting program became officially known as Scouts BSA and girls were admitted for the first time to that program.

OA now open to everyone

As outlined at https://oa-bsa.org/about/membership, everyone may be elected by the youth members of their unit to join the Order of the Arrow if they have experienced 15 nights of camping while registered with a troop, crew, or ship within the two years immediately prior to the election, and have also reached Scouts BSA First Class rank, the Venturing Discovery Award, or the Sea Scout Ordinary rank or higher, and following approval by the Unit Leader.

Temporary Transition Rules

  • On January 30, 2019, BSA reduced the number of months from twenty-four to twenty-two to complete Eagle Scout rank requirements for females and first-time joining boys entering Scouts BSA (who are 16 or older when they register with a Scouts BSA troop on or between February 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019). The twenty-two months start on the date the youth registers with a Scouts BSA troop. (see: Temporary transition rules give new Scouts BSA members the chance to earn Eagle, a January 31, 2019 article in Bryan on Scouting in Scouting Magazine.)
  • Due to significant feedback from the Scouting community, BSA has reset the maximum length of an Eagle Scout extension length back to 24 months, as was first announced in October.
Update: After careful consideration and listening to feedback from volunteers, the BSA has set the maximum length of an Eagle Scout extension length to 24 months, as was first announced in October. The post below has been updated to reflect the official policy.
