What is Personally Identifiable Information?
While there are varying definitions of what officially constitutes Personally Identifiable Information (PII), our definition is pretty straight-forward:
| “ | Personally Identifiable Information is any information that can be used to identify, contact, or locate you. | ” |
Factors
The combination of any two (or more) of the following constitutes Personally Identifiable Information on this website:
- First name
- Last name
- Home or work address
- Information revealing some "other" place where you can be found at a given time
- — such as: The fact that you're a member of Troop 1234 could be used with other seemingly unrelated information to find you.
- Age, birthday, date of birth
- School or grade
- Hometown or place of birth
- Gender
- Mother's maiden name
- Zip Code
- Photographs or images (of course)
- ....you get the idea.
Combining any of these seemingly harmless facts constitutes Personally Identifiable Information — information that can be used to identify, contact, or locate you.
Example
"Hi! My name is James. I'm 13, a Life Scout, and am the PL of the Goth patrol in Troop 123 at ABC Church, Anytown... WE ROCK!"
