What is Personally Identifiable Information?

While there are varying definitions of what officially constitutes Personally Identifiable Information (PII), our definition is pretty straight-forward:

Personally Identifiable Information is any information that can be used to identify, contact, or locate you.

The combination of any two (or more) of the following constitutes Personally Identifiable Information on this website:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Home or work address
  • Information revealing some "other" place where you can be found at a given time
— such as: The fact that you're a member of Troop 1234 could be used with other seemingly unrelated information to find you.
  • Age, birthday, date of birth
  • School or grade
  • Hometown or place of birth
  • Gender
  • Mother's maiden name
  • Zip Code
  • Photographs or images (of course)
  • get the idea.

Combining any of these seemingly harmless facts constitutes Personally Identifiable Information — information that can be used to identify, contact, or locate you.

"Hi! My name is James. I'm 13, a Life Scout, and am the PL of the Goth patrol in Troop 123 at ABC Church, Anytown... WE ROCK!"
