The purpose of the National Summertime Award is to encourage packs to provide a year-round program by continuing to meet during the time periods when school is out of session for several weeks or months. If a pack is in a "year-round school" (or is part of a home-school association), the pack could earn the Summertime Pack Award by having a special pack activity during those breaks.
Boys who participate in three summertime pack events (one each in June, July, and August) are eligible to receive the National Summertime Award pin.
The pin is worn on the right pocket flap of the Cub Scout Uniform, pinned onto the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award, if present. Multiple pins may be displayed for each year the award is earned.
Since the goal of the Summertime award is to have Packs continue the program through the summer, the summertime award scouts receive should match their current rank rather than the rank they are working on (ie, boys who have attained the rank of Tiger will receive the Tiger pin even though they are in a Wolf Den and working towards the Wolf rank).
Den and Pack ribbons
A pack can qualify for the National Summertime Pack Award certificate and streamer by planning and conducting three pack activities-one each in June, July, and August.
Dens with an average attendance of at least half their members at the three summer pack events will be eligible for a colorful den participation ribbon for the den flag or den doodle.
Activity Ideas
One activity in June, July, and August is the minimum requirement. But remember that few Scouts will be able to make three specific dates during the summer. Consider offering at least two pack events each month. Ask your dens to each host an event. Your council and district should already be offering Cub Scout Day Camp and Cub Scout and Webelos Resident Camp as well as a variety of other activities for you to put in your calendar. So realistically your Cub Scouts may be able to choose from four or more activities each month.
Belt Loop Events - Many great Pack Activities tie into the rank levels as well as Belt Loops. Boys can work on their Pins the second year but consider having popular events no more than once every two years to avoid burn-out. Make sure that you always go over the basics and safety rules for each activity. A Pack Belt Loop event may feature one activity or combine several activities:
- Cub Scout Physical Fitness: Pack Olympics
- Cub Scout Fishing: Pack Fishing Derby
- Cub Scout Swimming: |Pack Swim Party at a public pool
- Cub Scout Flag Football: Pack Flag Football Game
- Cub Scout Softball: Pack Softball Game
- Cub Scout Roller Skating: Pack Roller Skating Party
- Cub Scout Ultimate: Pack Frisbee Golf or Frisbee Football
- Cub Scout Volleyball: Pack Volleyball Game
- Cub Scout Geology Rock Hounds or Fossil Hunt
- Cub Scout SoccerPack Soccer Game
- Cub Scout Bicycling: Pack Bike Ride or Bike Rodeo
Other Activities can be just for fun or to support Fundraising or other program areas such as these Summertime Activities:
- Pack Campout (at least one leader needs to be BALOO trained)
- Popcorn kickoff event
- Pack Picnic (squirt guns, competitions, etc.)
- Back to School Cook-out at a local park
- Zoo Trip
- Museum Trip
- Minor League Baseball Game or other sporting event
- Pack Hike (consider "backpacking" lunches in your book bags)
- Leave No Trace Pack Conservation Scavenger Hunt
- Historical landmark tour
- Police Department Tour - National Child Identification Program - Fingerprinting! - Crime Prevention Award
- Fire Department Tour: Emergency Preparedness Award
