Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country.

Philmont Treks

Troops, Teams, Crews, and Council contingents plan expeditions for crews of seven to 12 members often years in advance. Philmont Treks provides an unforgettable adventure in sky-high backpacking country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails. Program features combine the best of the Old West - horseback riding, burro packing, gold panning, chuckwagon dinners, and interpretive history - with exciting challenges for today, such as rock climbing, burro racing, mountain biking, and .30-06 rifle shooting. It's an unbeatable recipe for fast-moving fun and the outdoors. See the Information for Hikers and the 2010 Philmont Registration Packet for more information.

Philmont Training Center

Founded in 1950, the Philmont Training Center (PTC) is the only national volunteer training center for the Boy Scouts of America. More than 6,000 Scouters and family members attend PTC each year. Each conference features the latest tools and techniques, audiovisuals, discussions, idea sharing, and activities led by a faculty of experienced Scouters. Invitation to these conferences is upon recommendation of the local council or a national committee.

Family Programs provide age-appropriate activities for every member of the family from infants to spouses.

  • Cub Scout age boys and girls participate in nature hikes, picnics, pony rides, lawn games, songs and skits, day hikes, sports, museum tours, and handicrafts.
  • Webelos age boys and girls add activities such as archery, pony rides, air rifle shooting. 10-year-olds can also take part in the parent-child overnighter.
  • Boy Scout age boys and girls who qualify can add an overnight hike to their schedule.
  • Silverados are spouses or other adults who are not attend a conference. Silverados can choose from museum visits, tours, nature walks, trips to nearby towns, COPE, fishing, and day-hiking.

What if you have a son or daughter who wants to hike at Philmont but cannot attend with a traditional Philmont Crew? The Mountain Trek option is for qualified young men and women who are 14 years old, but not yet 21. Mountain Trek crews take part in a week-long backpacking experience where they will cover 20 to 30 miles in the backcountry.
