The Skipper is the adult responsible for working directly with the Sea Scouts to help them create the program for the ship. The Skipper trains leaders to run the ship by providing direction, coaching, and support.


Position description

The Skipper is the key adult leader and is responsible for training ship officers, helping them plan a program of activities, coaching them in their leadership responsibilities, and obtaining adult help and resources as needed through the ship committee. The Skipper is supported by one or more Mates who serve as backup leaders and provide assistance for the program administration of the crew.

The ultimate responsibility for the ship rests with the Skipper. All information from the chartered organization goes through the Skipper. He or she participates in all ship meetings and activities, and attends all quarterdeck and ship committee meetings, and conductive the annual quarterdeck training. The Skipper sets the tone for the ship, models leadership and helps petty officers become leaders of their own ship.


  • Foster a sense of community within the ship
  • Develop the youth to lead, plan, make decisions, and carry out a long term program of activities
  • Encourage participation and support for the Ship
  • Uphold the standards and policies of the sponsoring organization and the Boy Scouts of America
  • Protect young people in the ship from abuse and neglect and upholding the standards of Boy Scouts's Youth Protection program
  • Ensure the activities are conducted within safety guidelines and requirements
  • Cultivate the Sea Scouting spirit within the ship
