- Per the BSA: "You should read the merit badge pamphlet on the subject." Pamphlets (books) are at local Scout Shops and online at ScoutStuff.org.
- "Get a signed Merit Badge application from your Scoutmaster." An online, printable Word doc file version is available.
- The activities used to fulfill the requirements for the Sports merit badge may not be used to help fulfill requirements for other merit badges.
- Restricted sports include those on the Unauthorized and Restricted Activities list:
- Boxing
- Karate
- "Related Martial Arts" (excepting judo, aikido, and tai chi)
- Parachuting
- Flying
- Motorized speed events (motorbikes, drag racing, speedboats)
- Paintball
- Hunting
- Parasailing
