Standard terminology

The BSA makes use of standard terminology for parallel organizational structures, activities and methods. Essentially, separate programs use different names to mean the same thing. When appearing in handbooks and other communications, standard terms often may be substituted for the official term used by the four programs for older youth programs Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, Venturing, and Sea Scouting.

Standard terms are particularly relevant between Boy Scouting and Varsity Scouting, and for Venturing and Sea Scouting. In some cases the methods are parallel but the aims have differences such as the team system in Boy Scouting compared to Venturing. In other cases parallels do not apply to all four programs such as equivalencies assistant patrol leaders in Varsity Scouting and Venturing.
