Varsity emblem information moved

Hi Missylou2who,

Thanks for all your hard work. The BSA 'V' emblem* information has been moved to the Awards page. The Varsity emblem was moved because it is not a rank. Despite what may appear on other web sites, BSA policy specificly states that "the Boy Scout requirements shall be the basis for Varsity Scout advancement."

Venturing advancement

Missy, do you think we should make a page called Venturing advancement and put the Bronze, Gold, and Silver awards and requirements there? —ScouterSig 11:49, October 23, 2007 (EDT)

typo fixed

Thanks for alerting us to the typo - that is exactly the way it should be done. The requirement pages are locked to prevent anyone from changing them, either maliciously or inadvertently. The sysops scan recent changes frequently, so if you put an alert anywhere, it will be noticed. Scouterdennis 10:28, October 23, 2008 (EDT)

Re: typo fixed
Not to sound like the crank here, but it reminds me of the company who bought their employees laptop computers, only to chain them to their desks so no one would steal them.
Perhaps there are currently not enough vigilant editors for this site to catch every vandal or well meaning snafu (Type I errors of commission), but the risk of adding this layer of having administrators making changes increases the likelihood of discouraging new and revised changes (more lethal Type II errors of omission).
Take for example the infamous sloppiness of *official* BSA publications: The Religious and Community Life Bronze Award has two very different sets of 2006 "latest" requirements one from the Venturer Handbook, and the other from the TRUST handbook. The Venturing Silver Award requirements have significant differences between the current Venturer Handbook and the Venturing Leader Handbook. (Pity the poor youth trying to figure out the real requirements.)
The site does not track these differences either; their pages have not been updated since Aug 6, 2007. And gee, no one has ever bothered to contact site so the pages could be edited by an administrator. I think you would be stunned if you did a careful comparison of official BSA requirements and pages. I have found a number of typos, missing requirements and other bone-headed errors on that site.
Paradoxically, it is the constraints of the administrator-update site model that degrades It is the value of user controls of the wiki-update site model of that will cause it to leapfrog it to the top as a Internet subject authority. Have you googled many Scouting topics a year ago and now? I have been watching with interest as has climbed from as many as six results pages back to the first page, and even the first item in some searches. does not have as many Scouter editors as to police and revert vandalism. I remember back even three or more years ago at the amateurish state Scouting topics were on; I'm certain there must have been a natural reaction to call for content-controlled authoritarianism. is now the poster child for the value of wikifying content brings to a site. has its place and I do not want to see it go away. But its the wiki content is what brings long-term value to -- this is why my money is on this site for ultimately becoming a major Scouting subject authority along side of the BSA and Wikipedia site. perfectly fills the void that those two sites cannot fill. is not there yet. My plea is to show patience with the wiki process. I thought it was a good compromise to not allow anonymous editing, along with the immediate suspension of vandals; I also realize that even with this there still posed an administrative nightmare. But I do now fear for the new trajectory caused by locking down so much content does for the's destination. I strongly believe that the harm this does may not be detected for a few years when this people begin to realize that this site has become as dead as
The Internet does not need two sites. This is my opinion. My apologies for rehashing this topic you all probably covered in your discussion forums. Missylou2who 11:23, October 24, 2008 (EDT)

Citizenship in the Community, I, Clausius

Missylou, you are right. This movie does have sex and nudity. The test for the movies we recommend is that they have to have a good message. But they have to be completely appropriate for 11 year-olds to watch at a Boy Scout meeting in the church basement. This is not. And as to, check the Siteanalytics. USScouts is very much alive and well and averaging twice the activity we get. Paul does an amazing job with it.— Milominderbinder2 (Sysop) 14:57, October 31, 2008 (EDT)

"As a Crew Officer" responsibilities

I have restored the inadvertently deleted text. I don't know what happened - I certainly did not remove it on purpose. Looking at the edit history, my guess is that I had the edit window open for that article (6 hours, I know!), and you made changes in the meantime which were overwritten when I saved my changes. Again, I did not delete your edits on purpose, and thanks for all of the work you have been doing lately! Scouterdennis 12:08, December 3, 2008 (EST)

Please see Edit conflict for an explanation. —RWSmith (Bureaucrat), 12:30, December 3, 2008 (EST)
Sorry for the fire drill! It is easy to feel like I'm all alone when editing :-) And thank you all for the quick response. Missylou2who
