Hello, welcome to my talk page!

If you want to leave a message, please do so at the bottom and using headings, for better formatting. You can do this by simply pressing the plus sign (+) on the top of this page. Don't forget to enter a relevant topic at the beginning of your post; and, please, always sign your messages posted in here by typing four tildes, like this, ~~~~ at the end of your posts.

Attention: Wikipedians, like everybody else, dislike fragmented discussions. So:

  • If you leave a comment for me, I will most likely respond to it in here, in this same page, on my talk page, as an effort to keep the entire conversation in one place.
  • By the same token, if I leave a comment on your talk page, always feel free to respond to it there, on your talk page.

Remember, we can each (individually) use our watchlists to keep track of when responses are made. Also, feel free to leave me an alert on this page about a comment you have left elsewhere that you want me to check out.

Thank you! --RWSmith 04:31, April 6, 2007 (EDT)

Example: Subject/headline

Message body --Signature --RWSmith 06:01, April 6, 2007 (EDT)

Each Reply, is indented (for clean formatting) by beginning with a ":" (minus the quotes) at the beginning of the edit. --RWSmith 10:17, April 17, 2007 (EDT)
Additional colons should be added for each subsequent reply. --RWSmith 10:17, April 17, 2007 (EDT)
And so on... --RWSmith 10:17, April 17, 2007 (EDT)

Like so:

== Example: Subject/headline ==

Message body --~~~~ (Signature)

:Each Reply, is indented (for clean formatting) by beginning with a ":" (minus the quotes)
 at the beginning of the edit. --~~~~ (Signature)

::Additional colons should be added for each subsequent reply. --~~~~ (Signature)

Hi RW,

Nice talk page. --Optimist 11:01, April 7, 2007 (EDT)

Thanks. --RWSmith 19:01, April 13, 2007 (EDT)

1. thanks for the credit for the userboxes. if you look at my wikipedia user page, you will see why i like them so much User:YAKatz.
2. i am not sure who put this article together (it seems like you), but at the end, i am not sure where it is going from there (in the instructions). if you tell me what you planned to write, i might be able to finish it up. --Yakatz 15:02, April 29, 2007 (EDT)

Yeah, I adapted it for this site; but, you are certainly welcome to edit workpages. --RWSmith 00:18, April 30, 2007 (EDT)

Userbox: User eagle scout

i am trying to make the userbox accept an argument for whether the user has any palms.
any idea's why it wont work?
--Yakatz 15:05, April 29, 2007 (EDT)

Nah; I tried also... to no avail. I do know there are some differences in the s/w run on "the" Wikipedia and MediaWiki. I'm still trying to learn what we can and cannot do with this code. A programmer I am not; I'm a hardware geek, by trade. ;-) --RWSmith 23:39, April 29, 2007 (EDT)

Hey Man

Thanks for keeping order here. I noticed that you eliminated 2 vandals on 6/10. Nice Job!!! --Stranger 18:15, June 14, 2007 (EDT)

Wow. Thanks for noticing and taking the time to say so. I'm humbled. We've really got a great core team of Sysops; but, this whole wiki thing is new to us, myself included. The site is new; --Thank you! Oh, wise and mighty Optimist!-- hence the low vandal rate. But, we've been getting hammered with the bots; so, I expecting things in the admin department's duties will be picking up, soon... Hopefully though, it'll be smooth and quite in the basement. --RWSmith 11:58, June 15, 2007 (EDT)
You're welcome. I was wondering how you achieved the green box around the text at the top of the page. I was trying to format my talk page and could not figure it out. You can put it on my page or on this one, doesn't matter.--Stranger 14:07, June 15, 2007 (EDT)
Never mind, I found out how...thanks anyway.--Stranger 14:40, June 15, 2007 (EDT)

Two Points

First off, the page for Citizenship in the Community. I have a question. Do we need to have it recommend R rated movies? It could lead to problems later. Second, you reverted my removal of two links on the Hiking page. I removed one because it is broken and leads to an error, and I edited the other to make its destination clearer. Why did you revert it? Sorry if you had a good reason, I'm relatively new to the wiki so I was just wondering if those were like that for a reason. Epmatsw 18:33, June 18, 2007 (EDT)

First point... Good question. I'd ask that over on the Talk:Citizenship in the Community page.
Second point... Since you also posted this over on Talk:Hiking, see my reply there --RWSmith 18:54, June 18, 2007 (EDT)

Userbox Templates Page

I suggest removing everything in Category:Userbox_Templates as it leads to confusion on the Category:Eagle_Scout_Users page and the templates dont do anything anyway.

--Yakatz 16:49, June 26, 2007 (EDT)

It's just shorthand to display a template with a link. Like. . .I create Template:Foo; I'd use {{foo}} to show users how to use it on a page, and give them a link to the actual template so they can read the documentation. Is that what you meant? Blast 13:40, July 14, 2007 (EDT)

It's only fair for me to tell you- this wiki is awesome. I had my doubts, but I love it here and can't wait to contribute more to this! Great work, RW. Really- fantastic job :D

Discontinued MB List

Around a week and a half ago I proposed an idea for creating a list of discontinued merit badges and such and you said you'd get back to me in a few days or so about it. I was just wondering if I can go ahead and send you some stuff I've made now or hold off for a bit longer. Thanks; please respond asap. Take care. Swim4lyfe 22:32, September 5, 2007 (EDT)

Don't worry about it; get to it when you can. I really can only do work with MBO during the weekends anyways, due to school and all. Nice template- see the stuff I wrote down. I categorized the merit badges in a different way (this was before you made your list) so if you want to see that one, just tell me.

Pages that need creation

RW, is there a list of pages that need creation/large work? While I am an experienced Wikipedia guy, I find that working on a relatively new project is a bit different. I guess I just need a direction to focus my energies on. Thanks. —ScouterSig 11:10, September 13, 2007 (EDT)

Funny you should mention that. Every time I "find" a page to create, and go over to Wikipedia to see how it's done... not just on the surface; but, really digging deep into the bowels of the thing... I find three more "things" that we need. Good grief!
I will say this, though... I like to take only what we need (from Wikipedia) for our purposes here, though... i.e., K.I.S.S. For example, we don't need four levels of User warnings; and we certainly don't need 50 different kinds.
I've unintentionally been putting it off; but, let's try to get some "collaboration" going on here... Templates, Help, Portals(?), Userboxes, Community portal, etc... where Contributors can share ideas, help each other out, etc. Contributors need to understand that there are two ways to help out:
  • First, there's the Main namespace—where everything Scouting-related goes. There are already lots of articles in there that are in serious need of attention... e.g., Stubs, Expand, Wikify.
  • Second, is all the other namespaces—MeritBadgeDotOrg (the "project" namespace), Templates, Help, Category, Image and, of course, User
I'm sure, being an experienced Wikipedian, you're already aware of all this. But, I'm writing it out so others can benefit from our conversation, as well. So, the question is... "What do you like to do?" I, personally, like to work on the administrative/maintenance stuff... I figure there's plenty of folks who would rather work on building up the Scouting articles, anyhow.
I'm going to put up some collaboration pages later this evening, and will probably copy part of this over to the Community portal, as well. Thanks for asking. I'll add to my reply some more later. And welcome aboard! --RWSmith (Sysop), 16:58, September 13, 2007 (EDT)

Leadership template

RW, please check out my template for leadership positions that I am working on. Tell me what you think. —ScouterSig 16:41, September 18, 2007 (EDT)

See User talk:Scoutersig/Workspace2 --RWSmith (Sysop), 12:31, September 23, 2007 (EDT)
As for your proposal at User talk:Scoutersig/Workspace, when would there be approval (for youth positions) by anyone except the Scoutmaster? (And the Scoutmaster and Committee Chair are both appointed by the Troop Committee, correct? Am I missing other positions?) —ScouterSig 11:41, September 26, 2007 (EDT)
The SPL apoints the ASPL with the SM's approval. (I was going to add some light colors; but I had to go.) BTW, I was just trying to mess around, trying a little something different, maybe spark some ideas for you. I think the one you already made is just fine — even great. --RWSmith (Sysop), 14:02, September 26, 2007 (EDT)
(Modestly) Thank you. I'm not trying to discount your suggestions, I just want to present information both accurately and simply. —ScouterSig 16:05, September 26, 2007 (EDT)

Hey I'm back

Hey RWSmith, I'm sorry I've been gone for a while, but school started and I've been extremely busy. I've pretty much gotten it all under control now, so I'm back and ready for whatever you need for me to do. Once against I apologize for my inactivity and I hope that I haven't done (or haven't done) anything to cause problems on MBOrg. Could you send me some information on what's been going on lately and post it on my talk page? I'm happy to do whatever you want me to do, and I want you to know I'm happy to be back. Thanks. Swim4lyfe 17:13, October 14, 2007 (EDT)

Cool! Welcome back! Let me think... --RWSmith (Sysop), 05:24, October 16, 2007 (EDT)

RW, could you copy some Wikipedia templates to I was hoping to use See also and For. I may come up with another. These templates would be very useful; I see you already made a Template:Main, so you must know what I mean. Thanks. —ScouterSig 19:10, October 25, 2007 (EDT)

Okay. (I've been swamped, lately... Sorry.) --RWSmith (Sysop), 03:38, October 30, 2007 (EDT)

Update Main Page

RWSmith, Could I request you to make some changes to the Main Page? Since the page is protected, and it does not appear that anyone really ever looks at the discussion for the page, I am not sure what is the course to take.

Two requests:

1. Delete the page: Venturer Electives

This page was created under a misunderstanding of what electives and core requirements are. There are no "Venterer Electives" but rather core and elective requirements for the Venturing Ranger Award.

Done --RWSmith (Sysop), 07:12, November 8, 2007 (EST)
2. Change the section "Advancement Requirements" to:

Advancement requirements

Thanks in advance for the help —User:Missylou2who 14:12, November 6, 2007 (EDT)

Done --RWSmith (Sysop), 07:15, November 8, 2007 (EST)
Thanks again. —User:Missylou2who 9:24, November 8, 2007 (EDT)

User:Breakaway needs to be blocked for vandalism. --Stranger 12:18, November 21, 2007 (EST)

Opening up a second browser

Is it possible to set the pages up so that the external links open up in a second browser window(target=_blank)? Sure would make the site more user-friendly, keeping the main window at the site. EagleForumFan 04:18, November 24, 2007 (EST) (ETA: Also left you a message on my talk page)

I don't know how; but, it's a great idea. (I will work on this, though.) Any suggestions would be appreciated. --RWSmith (Sysop), 08:56, December 4, 2007 (EST)

Block vandal

Please block User:Mz5723 for vandalism of the Camping merit badge page. - Missylou2who 09:02, November 27, 2007 (EST)

Remove inapprorate image Fsm.jpg

I suggest that Fsm.jpg be deleted from this site. See my comments on Image talk:Fsm.jpg if you concur. This was more likely added as an attempt at humor rather than to be disparaging, but it doesn't belong on this site regardless.

I have sent a request to BigTuna, politely asking him to consider removing said Userbox and image. --RWSmith (Sysop), 02:07, December 19, 2007 (EST)

The difference between "Help with these requirements" and "External Links"

I'm seeing some inconsistency (and I'm sure I'm contributing to it ;-)) with what goes where. Do *ALL* external links go under that section? What about ones that are specifically tied to a requirement? If so, what goes under Help? Is there a template page, or can you tell me which of the merit badge pages is done correctly so that I can see a proper example? -EagleForumFan 04:36, November 29, 2007 (EST)

Linking to Wikipedia?

Is there a policy about linking to Wikipedia as a source? IMHO, if there's another source with better (or as good as), it's not the best choice. EagleForumFan 12:56, December 6, 2007 (EST)

FWIW, my preference for Scouting links goes like this:
  • First, official BSA external links (or internal links to other MeritBadgeDotOrg pages);
  • Second, when appropraite, MeritBadge.Net forums;
  • Third, information, fact, or resouce pages at;
  • Fourth, information, fact, or resouce pages at Wikipedia's Scouting portal.

Part A

Personally, I love the worksheets for the boys. While they're not the be-all, end-all, they provide a good framework for those who have difficulty getting started. What policy is there regarding linking them? I'm assuming that it's best to link to's worksheets, but know that there are others out there. I'm willing to go through and put the links on each MB page, if you give me the direction (link to which of them??) and the go-ahead. EagleForumFan 16:21, December 7, 2007 (EST)

EagleForumFan, I'm not ignoring you; really. I was in the hospital for several days a couple of weeks ago; and, I'm still trying to get caught up and back up to speed. I have been thinking about your questions/proposals and will reply... just need a little time to catch my breath, so to speak. ;-) --RWSmith (Sysop), 02:11, December 10, 2007 (EST)
Hope you're feeling better! I'm in no hurry. Sorry to inundate you :-). EagleForumFan 01:32, December 11, 2007 (EST)
The best source (that I know of) for Worksheets is -- their list is up-to-date;'s is not. Providing links to is perfectly okay. --RWSmith (Sysop), 01:54, December 19, 2007 (EST)
FWIW, my preference for Scouting links goes like this:
  • First, official BSA external links (or internal links to other MeritBadgeDotOrg pages);
  • Second, when appropraite, MeritBadge.Net forums;
  • Third, information, fact, or resouce pages at;
  • Fourth, information, fact, or resouce pages at Wikipedia's Scouting portal.

Part B

I am trying to get a page set up that lists all of the merit badge worksheets from the previous site, but it is taking awhile simply because of the sheer number of merit badges, if you would like to help, I would tell you how. The page is titled "Merit Badge Worksheets" (who knew.) --Stranger 16:03, December 15, 2007 (EST)

P.S. Does anyone know how to set up a table in this wiki? It would make my job much easier.

Then shall we just link to the page Stranger set up in the Help with these requirements section of each badge? EagleForumFan 18:25, December 16, 2007 (EST)
Check these out:
--RWSmith (Sysop), 01:54, December 19, 2007 (EST)
I linked up each one of the merit badge names with their respective requirements. This could lead to a combination of the merit badge page and the workbook page, since they are so closely related. Just a thought. --Stranger 14:27, December 22, 2007 (EST)

Google Gadgets

I run a website for scout packs, troops in my community and wrote a Google gadget to provide an online index of merit badges that bundles local merit badge advisors with links to relevant pages/graphics from this site. Could you refer me to someone in the MeritBadgeDotOrg community who can review this index and let me know if I'm using your material appropriately? -- awmagnuson 07:08, December 11, 2007 (EST)

This is a followup -- I put up a short article on my user page to show what I'm talking about.

I'd be very grateful if someone could take a look. -- awmagnuson 09:01, December 13, 2007 (EST)

Cool. Go for it. --RWSmith (Sysop), 00:54, December 19, 2007 (EST)

I, in trying to add a userbox, have created a few pages that are totally out of control. Is it possible for me to delete pages, or do the admins have to do it?--Stranger 16:04, January 2, 2008 (EST)
