Hello, welcome to my talk page!

If you want to leave a message, please do so at the bottom and using headings, for better formatting. You can do this by simply pressing the plus sign (+) on the top of this page. Don't forget to enter a relevant topic at the beginning of your post; and, please, always sign your messages posted in here by typing four tildes, like this, ~~~~ at the end of your posts.

Attention: Wikipedians, like everybody else, dislike fragmented discussions. So:

  • If you leave a comment for me, I will most likely respond to it in here, in this same page, on my talk page, as an effort to keep the entire conversation in one place.
  • By the same token, if I leave a comment on your talk page, always feel free to respond to it there, on your talk page.

Remember, we can each (individually) use our watchlists to keep track of when responses are made. Also, feel free to leave me an alert on this page about a comment you have left elsewhere that you want me to check out.

Thank you! --RWSmith 04:31, April 6, 2007 (EDT)

Example: Subject/headline

Message body --Signature --RWSmith 06:01, April 6, 2007 (EDT)

Each Reply, is indented (for clean formatting) by beginning with a ":" (minus the quotes) at the beginning of the edit. --RWSmith 10:17, April 17, 2007 (EDT)
Additional colons should be added for each subsequent reply. --RWSmith 10:17, April 17, 2007 (EDT)
And so on... --RWSmith 10:17, April 17, 2007 (EDT)

Like so:

== Example: Subject/headline ==

Message body --~~~~ (Signature)

:Each Reply, is indented (for clean formatting) by beginning with a ":" (minus the quotes)
at the beginning of the edit. --~~~~ (Signature)

::Additional colons should be added for each subsequent reply. --~~~~ (Signature)

:::And so on... --~~~~ (Signature)

Hi RW,

Nice talk page. --Optimist 11:01, April 7, 2007 (EDT)

Thanks. --RWSmith 19:01, April 13, 2007 (EDT)

1. thanks for the credit for the userboxes. if you look at my wikipedia user page, you will see why i like them so much User:YAKatz.
2. i am not sure who put this article together (it seems like you), but at the end, i am not sure where it is going from there (in the instructions). if you tell me what you planned to write, i might be able to finish it up. --Yakatz 15:02, April 29, 2007 (EDT)

Yeah, I adapted it for this site; but, you are certainly welcome to edit workpages. --RWSmith 00:18, April 30, 2007 (EDT)

Userbox: User eagle scout

i am trying to make the userbox accept an argument for whether the user has any palms.
any idea's why it wont work?
--Yakatz 15:05, April 29, 2007 (EDT)

Nah; I tried also... to no avail. I do know there are some differences in the s/w run on "the" Wikipedia and MediaWiki. I'm still trying to learn what we can and cannot do with this code. A programmer I am not; I'm a hardware geek, by trade. ;-) --RWSmith 23:39, April 29, 2007 (EDT)

Hey Man

Thanks for keeping order here. I noticed that you eliminated 2 vandals on 6/10. Nice Job!!! --Stranger 18:15, June 14, 2007 (EDT)

Wow. Thanks for noticing and taking the time to say so. I'm humbled. We've really got a great core team of Sysops; but, this whole wiki thing is new to us, myself included. The site is new; --Thank you! Oh, wise and mighty Optimist!-- hence the low vandal rate. But, we've been getting hammered with the bots; so, I expecting things in the admin department's duties will be picking up, soon... Hopefully though, it'll be smooth and quite in the basement. --RWSmith 11:58, June 15, 2007 (EDT)
You're welcome. I was wondering how you achieved the green box around the text at the top of the page. I was trying to format my talk page and could not figure it out. You can put it on my page or on this one, doesn't matter.--Stranger 14:07, June 15, 2007 (EDT)
Never mind, I found out how...thanks anyway.--Stranger 14:40, June 15, 2007 (EDT)

Two Points

First off, the page for Citizenship in the Community. I have a question. Do we need to have it recommend R rated movies? It could lead to problems later. Second, you reverted my removal of two links on the Hiking page. I removed one because it is broken and leads to an error, and I edited the other to make its destination clearer. Why did you revert it? Sorry if you had a good reason, I'm relatively new to the wiki so I was just wondering if those were like that for a reason. Epmatsw 18:33, June 18, 2007 (EDT)

First point... Good question. I'd ask that over on the Talk:Citizenship in the Community page.
Second point... Since you also posted this over on Talk:Hiking, see my reply there --RWSmith 18:54, June 18, 2007 (EDT)

Userbox Templates Page

I suggest removing everything in Category:Userbox_Templates as it leads to confusion on the Category:Eagle_Scout_Users page and the templates dont do anything anyway.

--Yakatz 16:49, June 26, 2007 (EDT)

It's just shorthand to display a template with a link. Like. . .I create Template:Foo; I'd use {{foo}} to show users how to use it on a page, and give them a link to the actual template so they can read the documentation. Is that what you meant? Blast 13:40, July 14, 2007 (EDT)

It's only fair for me to tell you- this wiki is awesome. I had my doubts, but I love it here and can't wait to contribute more to this! Great work, RW. Really- fantastic job :D

Discontinued MB List

Around a week and a half ago I proposed an idea for creating a list of discontinued merit badges and such and you said you'd get back to me in a few days or so about it. I was just wondering if I can go ahead and send you some stuff I've made now or hold off for a bit longer. Thanks; please respond asap. Take care. Swim4lyfe 22:32, September 5, 2007 (EDT)

Don't worry about it; get to it when you can. I really can only do work with MBO during the weekends anyways, due to school and all. Nice template- see the stuff I wrote down. I categorized the merit badges in a different way (this was before you made your list) so if you want to see that one, just tell me.

Pages that need creation

RW, is there a list of pages that need creation/large work? While I am an experienced Wikipedia guy, I find that working on a relatively new project is a bit different. I guess I just need a direction to focus my energies on. Thanks. —ScouterSig 11:10, September 13, 2007 (EDT)

Funny you should mention that. Every time I "find" a page to create, and go over to Wikipedia to see how it's done... not just on the surface; but, really digging deep into the bowels of the thing... I find three more "things" that we need. Good grief!
I will say this, though... I like to take only what we need (from Wikipedia) for our purposes here, though... i.e., K.I.S.S. For example, we don't need four levels of User warnings; and we certainly don't need 50 different kinds.
I've unintentionally been putting it off; but, let's try to get some "collaboration" going on here... Templates, Help, Portals(?), Userboxes, Community portal, etc... where Contributors can share ideas, help each other out, etc. Contributors need to understand that there are two ways to help out:
  • First, there's the Main namespace—where everything Scouting-related goes. There are already lots of articles in there that are in serious need of attention... e.g., Stubs, Expand, Wikify.
  • Second, is all the other namespaces—MeritBadgeDotOrg (the "project" namespace), Templates, Help, Category, Image and, of course, User
I'm sure, being an experienced Wikipedian, you're already aware of all this. But, I'm writing it out so others can benefit from our conversation, as well. So, the question is... "What do you like to do?" I, personally, like to work on the administrative/maintenance stuff... I figure there's plenty of folks who would rather work on building up the Scouting articles, anyhow.
I'm going to put up some collaboration pages later this evening, and will probably copy part of this over to the Community portal, as well. Thanks for asking. I'll add to my reply some more later. And welcome aboard! --RWSmith (Sysop), 16:58, September 13, 2007 (EDT)

Leadership template

RW, please check out my template for leadership positions that I am working on. Tell me what you think. —ScouterSig 16:41, September 18, 2007 (EDT)

See User talk:Scoutersig/Workspace2 --RWSmith (Sysop), 12:31, September 23, 2007 (EDT)
As for your proposal at User talk:Scoutersig/Workspace, when would there be approval (for youth positions) by anyone except the Scoutmaster? (And the Scoutmaster and Committee Chair are both appointed by the Troop Committee, correct? Am I missing other positions?) —ScouterSig 11:41, September 26, 2007 (EDT)
The SPL apoints the ASPL with the SM's approval. (I was going to add some light colors; but I had to go.) BTW, I was just trying to mess around, trying a little something different, maybe spark some ideas for you. I think the one you already made is just fine — even great. --RWSmith (Sysop), 14:02, September 26, 2007 (EDT)
(Modestly) Thank you. I'm not trying to discount your suggestions, I just want to present information both accurately and simply. —ScouterSig 16:05, September 26, 2007 (EDT)

Hey I'm back

Hey RWSmith, I'm sorry I've been gone for a while, but school started and I've been extremely busy. I've pretty much gotten it all under control now, so I'm back and ready for whatever you need for me to do. Once against I apologize for my inactivity and I hope that I haven't done (or haven't done) anything to cause problems on MBOrg. Could you send me some information on what's been going on lately and post it on my talk page? I'm happy to do whatever you want me to do, and I want you to know I'm happy to be back. Thanks. Swim4lyfe 17:13, October 14, 2007 (EDT)

Cool! Welcome back! Let me think... --RWSmith (Sysop), 05:24, October 16, 2007 (EDT)
