A bill to issue a commemorative silver dollar to honor the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 15, 2008 by a vote of 403-8 and by the U.S. Senate on September 27, 2008 by Unanimous Consent. The Bill was signed into law by President Bush on October 8, 2008.

Officially entitled "the Boy Scouts of America Centennial Commemorative Coin Act", the bill calls for 350,000 of the 90% silver and 10% copper $1 coins to be minted in 2010. There will be a $10 surcharge per coin, which will be paid to the National Boy Scouts of America Foundation, to be made available to local councils in the form of grants for the extension of Scouting in hard-to-serve areas.
