Unlike wikipedia, all content here is edit protected from unregistered users in order to combat vandalism. Otherwise, the vast majority of content on MeritBadgeDotOrg is not protected. However, similar to wikipedia, some content needs to be protected (for a wide variety of reasons). E.g.:

  • All policies and guidelines are edit-protected in order to prevent non-administrators from changing them.
  • All (advancement) requirements are edit-protected in order to prevent vandalism –and– to ensure they are subjected to administrative review prior to changes.
  • Lock templates may only be applied/removed by an administrator. If you need a page (un)protected, see {{editprotected}} for details.
Applying a lock template does NOT protect the article/page — that must be done separately, by an administrator.

  • In all cases, where any article, page, or section therein, is protected, a lock template should be applied.
  • In cases of having multiple reasons for page protection, only the most appropriate lock template should be applied.

Main namespace

  • In almost all cases, articles in the Main namespace that have are protected (or have a protected section) should have a "lock only" template applied; we must consider these pages as printable and don't need to clutter them up when a simple lock only template will do the job.

Talk namespaces

Except for putting a stop to an edit war, there shouldn't be any other good reason to protect any "talk" page. (And even then, it should only be temporary.)

Other namespaces

Use the appropriate "message box" style or "lock only" template that would be the best fit for that particular page.
